Glossary - Interference in immunoassays

Interferences can occur in all kinds of immunoassays. There are different molecular reasons for an interfering binding of analyte and antibody. Interferences can be caused by antibodies from the sample e.g. HAMAs (human anti-mouse antibodies), anti-animal antibodies or heterophilic antibodies.
Other well-known interfering effects are cross-reactivities, matrix effects or interferences caused by endogenous components of the sample. All these interferences can lead to false results.
